Behind the Frame: Project NOLA

Our blog is intended to inspire and educate others about documentary storytelling. In our Behind the Frame series, we have asked our faculty and students to go back to their favorite images over the years and tell us, “Why does this stand out to you as an exceptional documentary moment?” We hope you enjoy what they have to say and be sure to check out the rest of the series.

“Moments, moments, moments”, still rings in my head from when I was a Momenta attendee and looking for true moments of connection and it remains what documentary photography is all about for me!

This image is a beautiful example of capturing a perfect moment of connection and is a true testament to the mission of LA-SPCA. The viewer is drawn in to the interaction between the staffer and the puppy in a playful interaction that speaks volumes about the caring and love that the non-profit has for its animals.

We don’t have to see the full face of the staffer to know that she is laughing and enjoying the interaction. Her embrace of the puppy demonstrates a warm hug that will surely be transferred to the viewer. The subjects are placed in a perfect third of the frame, with the light illuminating the puppy.

All set in a bright and colorful environment, this image is a great capture that the nonprofit will be able to use to demonstrate the happiness and love that takes place inside the walls of their home in New Orleans.”
