We Have Answers

Here are some frequently asked questions but we know you might have ones not addressed here. You can always call our offices too. No chat bots or A.I. helper. We have real humans answering the phones and we are ready to help you find the perfect trip for your photography goals!

  • A minimum deposit (or full tuition in some cases such as 1- and 3-day workshops) is required to hold your place on the workshop. Any discounts or scholarships will be applied at the time of the final payment, not when the deposit is made. Final payment is due no later than 90 days prior to the course start date listed above.

Each course is limited to a finite number of participants and should the occasion arise if a participant must be waitlisted after paying a deposit due to an error by our third party registration providers, we will notify you of this immediately and refund any tuition paid accordingly.

Momenta Group LLC reserves the right to cancel a reservation if full payment has not been received by 90 days prior to departure and all attempts to reach the registrant based on their email and telephone number given at registration have failed. For reservations made within 90 days of the departure date, full payment is required when the reservation is accepted.

  • Should you choose to cancel your registration, the following terms apply:

    • All cancellation notices must be received in writing via email and must be confirmed receipt by a Momenta staff member. Such cancellations will become effective as of the date of the postmark or email receipt.

    • If you cancel 120 days or more prior to departure, a refund will be issued minus an administrative fee of $600 (which covers the payment processing, banking, credit card, and registration fees we incur on our end for each person who registers). Per person charges for cancellations that occur less than 120 days prior to departure are as follows:

    • Cancellations that occur less than 120 days prior to departure are as follows:

    • 119-60 days prior to departure: you will forfeit 100% of your deposit;

    • 44 or fewer days prior to departure: you will forfeit 100% of the educational course cost and any Customer Add-On services without exception.

Should you request a transfer instead of canceling your registration, the following terms apply:

    • You can transfer your registration once only and it must be done prior to 45 days in advance of the workshop.

    • The workshop you select for a transfer must be in 12 months from the date of cancellation.

    • A transfer without penalty can only happen prior to 120 days before your workshop’s start date.

    • Between 119-45 days to the workshop, a transfer of your tuition may occur but will forfeit your deposit in full and remaining payments can be applied to your new workshop tuition or as a client credit.

    • Request to transfer 45 or fewer days from departure from your original workshop will not be accepted and you will lose all tuition monies paid to date.

    • Should you again cancel your new registration for the chosen transfer workshop, you will forfeit all deposits and payments to date and may be charged the additional cancellation fees above, depending on the date and circumstances of your cancellation.

All refunds are made via the original credit card given at the time of registration or via check to the name and address given at the time of registration. Momenta will attempt to process your credit card but if the card has expired or the refund is rejected for another reason, Momenta will mail a check to the registrant. Momenta Group LLC is not responsible for delayed refunds if you have moved from your address used at the time of registration and you did not inform our staff of your change of address. Refund checks are processed on the 1st or 3rd week of every month and are mailed via USPS regular postage and typically take 7-10 business days on average to arrive by mail at minimum but is completely at the whim of the post office delivery schedule.

  • We recommend travel insurance for any trip. In today’s day and age of increasing flight cancellations or surprise weather events, it never hurts to have a back up plan. Plus, most travel insurance covers things like lost luggage, medical needs on location, etc. We prefer Travel Insure for our staff insurance during our overseas and longer trips.

  • We don't refer to Momenta Group as a family for no reason. Momenta is a movement, not a bunch of master classes. We're a group with a common passion, teaching everyone to tell stories and share ideas with the world.

Approximately half of our instructors and mentors come from professional media backgrounds. A significant portion these have either been a client of our training programs, or started out doing portfolio reviews, virtual coaching or contract work for Momenta Creative.

    • We prefer instructors to have some background in mentorship or teaching first, but we also train aggressively.

    • Prior exposure to Momenta learning programs is a big plus, as we have a fairly unique method behind the scenes.

    • We lean towards instructors still in the active portion of their career, with ongoing projects in progress.

Again, we're less interested in notoriety and fame, than we are interested in selecting the talented and empathic teachers who are still passionate about photography and video production.

Contact our staff today with a LinkedIn page or resume and set up a time to talk about your interests in teaching. Our door is open to passionate photographers who want to make a difference.

  • Plenty! First, we have a very low attendee to faculty ratio. You won’t have to worry about fighting for face time with an instructor. Second, we believe in one-on-one daily editing with our students in periods between shoots. We don’t just go over a few “best of” selections. We look at your whole day’s work to find insights on how you can improve and areas where you are excelling. We know our trips are intensely learning-driven, but we mean for them to be.

Our goal is to help each attendee become an even better visual storyteller, regardless of where you are in your creative journey. We throw everything we have into each workshop. Because of our personalized attention to detail and learning, many attendees come back multiple times to keep improving their skills year after year.

Our dedicated faculty will help you hone all your creative skills whether you need to work on the basics or you want to discuss how to get your work published. From the very popular welcome bags or the personal editing sessions, we strive to be the best workshop you will ever experience.

  • Yes! Depending on the program, we have different accommodations for companions.

For international trips, we have to charge full tuition prices for spouses or non-photographer companions due to limited space availability on those workshops. Many spouses, children, and friends who have accompanied their partners love learning photography or even engage in our audio training to assist their travel partners with creating a multimedia package together. This could be the start of a great new adventure!

For domestic trips, we can make certain accommodations for companions to attend group lectures and participate in our social events. If they want suggestions on what to do during the days when you are photographing, we are happy to help them find a way to travel with you and also have fun.

Please contact us here and let’s discuss your special circumstances so we can find the best fit for you and your travel buddies!

  • No! Herd mentality is not our style nor is it conducive to documentary photography work. You can be certain our workshops are flexible with the schedule and we will treat you like an adult. If you want to skip a group meeting or event or strike out on your own for a special excursion, you are empowered to do so and we’ll help you plan some personal time.

  • At Momenta, we look for faculty who are not only the best photographers but also the best teachers to make your learning experience more valuable. We know firsthand some of the most well-known photographers are not always the best instructors of other photographers. We seek out the ones who can both do and teach, which is a rare and beautiful combination that makes Momenta’s teaching team so special.

Every Momenta instructor goes through intense interviews and training to make sure your experience is the best you’ve had on a workshop! Our instructors are all accomplished professional journalists, videographers, producers, businesses people, and storytellers who are experienced in the subjects they teach.

In many cases, we have asked exceptional past attendees to come back as as a mentor on their path to becoming faculty. These individuals were not only talented storytellers but also caring, supportive mentors. This model has brought in some of our most beloved faculty who we are proud to have on our team!

  • You do. You made them = you own the copyright.

On our nonprofit workshops, a Photo Release Agreement is sent to all parties to sign via DocuSign confirming you are the copyright holder of the images. The agreement states you are granting a limited license to a selection of images to the nonprofit and Momenta to use for these organization's outreach or educational purposes. However, the images are yours to keep and you own the full copyright.

  • Yes. Please see our Discounts, Awards & Scholarships pages for details.

  • Our workshops can be undertaken by anyone in a good state of health and fitness. Some of our workshops may require walking long distances, carrying your gear, and various degrees of physical activities. We recommend you read the itinerary thoroughly to recognize any possible challenges. Individuals with special needs, allergies, or physical conditions that might limit their experience are asked to discuss this with Momenta staff prior to registering.

  • We suggest you bring at least one digital SLR, mirrorless, or rangefinder camera and, ideally, one additional lens. If you are doing a multimedia project, we recommend you bring a back up audio device and any video gear you need to create your project.

Yes, you can use an iPhone or any method of creative storytelling you want but we find the images are best for you and your stories if you bring a camera with more options than only a phone.

We also suggest you have a basic grasp of working with your camera and its manual mode. This includes an understanding of light metering, the ability to apply aperture or shutter speed settings, and how to get a correct exposure.

During our workshops, you will need to download images from your camera to your laptop, edit images using an image browser, and backup your images for critique. Therefore, you’ll want to bring a laptop computer, several digital memory cards, a card reader, and (highly recommended) an external hard drive.

Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have additional gear questions. We’re happy to help you develop the perfect kit for your trip.

In our pre-workshop mailings, we may send along further information pertaining to your travel or the destination. This may include packing lists and location specific information.

The best way to prepare though? Get ready to learn. We know that sounds trite but an open mind is the best way to approach a Momenta Workshop.

We teach attendees how to enterprise daily photo assignments while working in the field and learn visual problem solving techniques. This success of the Momenta model stems from our insistence that clients learn to explore on their own and find creative solutions with our guidance.

Documentary storytelling teaches us to recognize and understand social nuances that might be invisible to the less informed creative person. This can only be accomplished by a high level of confidence and open-mindedness in social situations and with locals. Please expect that Momenta staffers will suggest, plead and cajole each and every attendee to expand their comfort zone whenever possible and try new experiences so they can grow and master their skills.

After 16 years of doing workshops, we know you'll be a stronger, better storyteller on the flip side.

  • Momenta is committed not only to social, documentary photojournalism but also helping storytellers become humanists. Over and above the creative development we can bring to aspiring photographers, we seek to create relationships between our students and host cities and countries. We accomplish this by doing everything we can to immerse students in local culture. In a very real sense, our clients are expected to be ambassadors in a positive and respectful manner.

Research prior to departure helps our attendees recognize commonality in the human condition and better adopt a sense of universal morality that is so important in documentary photography.

This being said, we won’t tell you “how” to think…only that you should. In many areas where Momenta operates, right and wrong ways of approaching a situation may be somewhat relative. For example, you may not discuss certain religious practices in one country whereas you could in another. Asking a person what they do for a living is considered an offense in some cultures where it is not in others. We try to let our clients make their own decisions about social norms based on their own observations and experience. This is the value of travel and exploration.

At the same time, we do not support practices that exploit residents, put our team in precarious situations, or break local laws (prostitution, drug use, etc.). Violation of this is grounds to be removed from a workshop without refund. Please use proper judgment when traveling on a Momenta Workshop, and we’ll do our best to ensure your experience is a memorable one.
